We're going to let you in on a secret...
{we like to celebrate}
Birthdays, Anniversarys, Weddings, Engagements, & For No Reason At All!
Shocker?{image by Kitty Rogers}
What we find a little more challenging is
how to appropriately celebrate + buy gifts for
{MEN}
our husbands to be exact.
They both have birthdays coming up.
(They're quickly ripening! Shhh, you didn't hear it from us!)
This has put us in the mode of thinking:
{How Do You Celebrate a MAN?!}
We just don't think they're that easy
(or maybe we're just making it more complicated than it is!)
I guess the first place to start is:
{What does your man LIKE?}
Here are a few fun gift & celebration ideas that are swimming (or have swam) in our heads...
.:.30 Wishes.:.{Image by Austin's Place}
When my husband turned 30, I (Allegra) gave him a box of 30 pennies and outlined 30 places we would go that day. His mission was to make a wish at each place.
It ended with a note from almost 30 people who loved him.
(I had asked them to write and send me a letter prior to his birthday just telling him what he meant to them.)
This celebration cost $0.30 but was a full day of special!
.:.Guys Weekend.:.
Last year I (Allegra again) gave my husband a weekend away to golf with his brother.
I realized that as much as I wanted to go get away with him, it would be a HUGE gift to give him time with his brother and to give him quality guy time. I found an incredible special and he even got a room upgrade!
Check out local or close to home hotels for winter specials!
.:.Make a Tradition.:.{image by opart}
Starting new traditions isn't always easy. It takes time to establish them, however, why not start this year? Low budget celebrations are my fortay but low budget doesn't mean "not special."
Take a day off of work (call his office and request a day off for him, even!), arrange for a sitter if you need one, get breakfast at his favorite spot or make breakfast in bed, go to a movie of his choice or rent one, and have a camp out in your own living room.
If you can't afford to get away, MAKE a get away.
Transform the living room into your hotel room: blow up bed, mini snacks, candles, dinner in!
Create what you want to celebrate!
The great thing about these celebrations is that they are gifts in themselves.
We'll be back with a gift idea follow up for the men in your life though.
You didn't think we'd leave you hanging did you?!

Great ideas, girls!
My husband is a grad student who works non-stop on homework, courses, and grading. I decided last year that what he needed most for his birthday in November was a day off. So I planned a "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"-themed day-long celebration for him. Activities on the agenda were a visit to our local museum (free), a ride around town in a fancy car, compliments of one of our best friends, a Mercedes saleman (also free), a fancy lunch at a lovely local restaurant (cheaper than dinner), and a little handmade pass for a "Your Grandmother Died," ticket to a day off for the companion of his choice, which was of course, me, and I had taken the day off work to spend it with him. We had lots of fun, though it didn't cost too much, and it felt very special because it was out of our usual routine. I'd made a little booklet for him with gift cards for lunch and coffee and a step-by-step activities agenda, which I placed in a small handmade cardboard slide-out box made to fit into an old "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" VHS sleeve. Birthday surprises are so much fun.
what great ideas. I am good at celebrating the birthdays and such but I need to be more intentional with the non holidays.
I LOVE your gift ideas! They are so sweet and personalized. I may need to steal a few of them... :)
Loving the blog and the new website!
So awesome!
